#Roman Bonanza Introduction

Roman Bonanza

Roman Bonanza Slot Overview

Are you familiar with the ever-popular Pirate Bonanza slot from Backseat Gaming? Then, you will be happy to learn that the recent release, Roman Bonanza, is a re-skinned version of it. Instead of fun-loving pirates, you are now heading into ancient Rome, with the mechanics more or less the same. Roman Bonanza by Backseat Gaming is a 6×5 drop cascades game with explosive multipliers. With a decent RTP of 96.31% and the possibility to win big with a maximum win of up to 10,000x, what more could one want? The caveat? The fact that mechanics are based on it’s predecessors might leave some wanting more innovation.

Pros

  • Familiar mechanics with fresh visuals and design
  • Max win of up to 10,000x
  • Flexibility with bonus buy option

Cons

  • Lacks innovation
  • No unique features

Roman Bonanza Video Review

Before playing the demo, see Roman Bonanza in action and explore its gameplay, features, and what it has to offer compared to Pirate Bonanza.

Roman Bonanza Slot Review

From my first-hand experience, I can say that while Roman Bonanza was oodles of fun to play, it left me feeling somewhat disappointed as I hoped for some innovations in terms of gameplay or features. The theme and mechanics are entertaining enough, but if you are looking for something different from the Pirate Bonanza online slot, this is not quite it. Here’s a breakdown of my findings while playing this cascading reels game:

Theme

The fact that the theme is distinctly different from other Bonanza slot machines in the series sets it apart. Symbols are well presented and aligned with the overall ancient Roman theme, including boots, rings, chalices, and helmets. Even though I enjoyed the theme, it didn’t quite live up to my expectations, as the visuals felt a little too familiar.

Graphics, Sounds and Animations

When it comes to the graphics and sounds of Roman Bonanza, I found it to be fitting yet undistinguished. Visuals are in line with other slots in the Bonanza series and are very easy to spot and get accustomed to. The music and sounds, however, feel too similar to other Bonanza games and don’t quite add to the overall gaming experience. In a nutshell, I expected a more distinctive take due to the particular theme, which is not the case.

RTP, Payout and Volatility

The RTP (Return to Player) of 96.31% is more or less in line with other similar slots. Keep in mind, though, that medium volatility means smaller payouts and little high-potential spins. When compared to other slot games, it just didn’t feel quite as rewarding when compared to different slots.

When I saw the maximum win potential in Roman Bonanza, which is 10,000x, I had great expectations since, in theory, it looks promising. However, during my playthrough, I found payouts to be inconsistent, with a couple of good wins but nothing exceptional. Needless to say, I tested the bonus buy, and this somewhat made up for it, along with the feature spins.

Players who prefer less risk will more than likely turn to Roman Bonanza, thanks to its medium volatility. This, of course, indicates a flow of steady yet smaller wins. In other words, if you are a fan of high volatility online slots, this one might not be your first choice. Due to the lower variance, I found the gameplay to be a bit humdrum and less exciting than other slots with similar max win potential. This is definitely a slot for players who prefer stability rather than high risks and excitement. I would recommend trying the Roman Bonanza slot demo before spinning the reels for real money winnings.

Slot Gameplay

There is nothing out of the ordinary in terms of gameplay in Roman Bonanza – simply land clusters of matching symbols to trigger wins. The same goes for feature spins, which are triggered by specific symbols – there really is nothing new, fresh, or innovative that I could find during the playthrough. As mentioned, I had expected a different take or some unique mechanics, but Roman Bonanza has nothing new to offer and closely simulates the gameplay of Pirate Bonanza. Again, when you play for free in demo mode, you get to see for yourself what to expect in terms of gameplay mechanics and overall feel. Always check out demo games before you risk real money.

Here’s a closer look at some of the specifics:

  • Land 4x Bonus Symbols in the base game to trigger the bonus round (feature spins).
  • Tumble Win is multiplied when you land the catapult symbol, which adds multiplier bombs to highlighted positions.

When in doubt, you can always refer to the paytable when playing slots like Roman Bonanza at popular online casinos. Here’s an overview of low and high-paying symbols:

Matching Symbols Gemstone Military Boots & Ring Goblet & Roman Helmet
19+ 100.00 400.00 800.00
17-18 40.00 120.00 240.00
15-16 20.00 40.00 80.00
13-14 5.00 10.00 20.00
11-12 2.00 4.00 8.00
10 1.00 3.00 4.00
9 0.40 2.00 3.00
8 0.20 1.00 2.00

You need to land at least 8 matching symbols across the 6 reels for a win.

Features

Roman Bonanza offers both feature spins and the option to buy bonuses, giving players Flexibility in how they approach the game. Are you looking to land sticky golden boxes? Then opt for the Super Bonus which will cost you 250x your bet. This was the best option for me, as the regular bonus didn’t quite offer much as it doesn’t retain golden boxes. Let’s take a closer look at the bonus features of this game:

Tumble Win

Above the slot grid, you will find the Tumble Win, where all your wins are added. After the win amount is added, winning symbols are removed, and new symbols drop for more winning opportunities.

Catapult Feature

Winning combinations are highlighted, and when a catapult symbol is on the grid, all highlighted symbols will be activated once the winning combination is added. Keep in mind that the catapult symbol only activates this feature if you have landed winning combinations.

Multiplier Bombs

If the catapult feature is activated, highlighted symbols (or squares) reveal multiplier bomb symbols. These explode to show the multiplier, which is then added to a total, including all multiplier bombs from top to bottom and left to right. Another interesting aspect is the differentiation between low- and high-value bombs and additive and multiplicative bombs. The former only adds its value, while the latter multiplies the value of the total multiplier. Here’s a breakdown:

  • Low-Value Bombs: These are additive, adding only their value to the winning combination, and can have 2x, 3x, 4x, or 5x multipliers.
  • Medium-Value Bombs: These bombs are also additive; they have multipliers of 10x, 20x, or 25x.
  • High-Value Bombs: These are the ones you will want to land, as they can have multipliers of 50x, 75x, or 100x. They are also additive.
  • Golden Multiplier Bombs: The only bombs that are multiplicative, they can have multipliers of x2, x3, x5, or x10.

Arm the Catapults Bonus Game

This bonus game awards 10 free spins when you land 4 bonus scatter symbols during the base game. These 10 free spins with increased chances to land the catapult symbol are very promising.

For a free spins round of 5 spins, you would need to land at least 3 bonus symbols in the Arm the Catapults bonus game.

Siege Command Bonus Game

To unlock the Siege Command bonus game and earn 10 free spins when you land 5 bonus scatter symbols during the same spin in the base game. This bonus game also increases your chances of landing the catapult symbol, while highlighted symbols remain as such for the duration of the bonus game.

A round of 5 free spins is triggered by landing a minimum of 3 bonus symbols.

Overall, I found the features to be exciting, yet standard and not much different from other Backseat Gaming slots I have played.
